Private Strategy: relief for the undercurrent, solutions that turn the tide.
-
You can be surrounded by a thousand people yet have no one who sees you clearly, tells you the truth, and helps get you to answers that make things better.
Life often gets harder to navigate in direct proportion to how many people are depending on you to get it right. What helps is having somewhere you can think out loud that never requires damage control. -
No one's life is a mountaintop-to-mountaintop situation. We all go through the valley. How much time you spend there is up to you.
Show up with the thing:
x Breaking you down
x Freaking you out
x Keeping you up at night
x Making life hard
x Pissing you off
x Taking over your brain
x Waiting on you to decide...and we figure it out, together.

For over a decade, I’ve been the call people make when something's in the way.
Guiding you to outcomes that are nothing less than underground-punk-show-in-a-church-basement awesome is my superpower.
This is continuous strategy work. It’s not coaching or therapy. I’m not here to tell you what to do, give you advice, or apply some formula I learned at a seminar by the airport to your problems. I’m here to be present to what you’ve got going on, work with you to figure out why it’s happening, what you want, and bring over 15,000 hours of applied know-how and experience to your game plan of what to do next.
Sometimes, the fix is quick. And sometimes, getting to better takes a few experiments. That’s the nature of problem-solving.
At this level, you’re not paying for my time or a deliverable. You're paying to never again be alone with the decision. To have access to sound discernment, at the moment the roadblock appears. The roadblock is the thing in the middle of you and that person, of you and that situation, and that’s what we work on figuring out, together.
From individuals to bootstrapped start-ups and billion-dollar corporations, unbiased guidance that doesn't bend to personal opinion, industry trends, fear-based decision making, or whatever people-pleasing, tunnel-vision nonsense is floating around, is rare. Yet, just like funnel cake, once you’ve had it, you want more.
Around here, I care that you get what you came for. The only real rule? Funnel cake isn’t accepted as payment. (Although… that's sort of a great idea? Hmmmm...)
-
Riding this wave is simple.
1st. We talk. That first conversation is where we feel each other out. I ask you questions, you’re free to ask me questions. And since believers and skeptics are welcome, it’s your choice if you want to pay for that first call or have it be on me.
2nd. A path forms. Based on that first conversation I give you an honest recommendation for what could be next. It’s not always working with me, but when it is, we set up a way to regularly connect. This usually looks like a consistent weekly check-in and the freedom to tag me in during your week as stuff comes up.
This is a high-touch experience, meaning you get a personalized, hands-on approach. The way you communicate, learn, and process is deeply important and thoughtfully considered.
3rd. You’ve got wise counsel in your corner. That may seem like a big thing to say, but I’ve been helping people for a long time. At this point, though I can’t explain it and don’t take credit for it, I understand my gift is real. For whatever reason, it’s just there. And it’s there for you. -
I might be your people, and I might not be. Either way, one thing is true: when I’m by your side, your life is better for it. I know this because I bring a lot of people comfort, relief, and happiness right when they’re sure all the lights have all gone out and nothing’s left but darkness. I get calls from everyday places like car rides, walks, and offices, but also from therapists’ parking lots, hospitals, and doctors’ waiting rooms.
I don’t know why I’m able to do what I do for people. All I know is it’s good to share good things, and I trust that the countless people who tell me about the positive impact I’ve had on their lives are speaking the truth. When everything’s on fire, I’m the one who stays calm. This is unsettling if you prefer your crises loud and unending. And look, what’s coming up is trying to get out, so let it out. The feelings, the thoughts, the physical movements, all of it.
Venting has its place. But at some point, suffering doesn’t cease because it goes round and round, it ceases when it gets seen, heard, accepted, felt. When faith and effort come together, you can create something spectacular.
You’re here to heal what hurts, to replace as much fear as you can with as much love as you can. In this way, the scale of pain tips more and more in a peaceful direction. Relief. Answers and actions that really change things for the better. And I’m here to help you do that.
If you’re on this page seeking a bullet point list of my accomplishments or an autobiography of my incredibly interesting life, this is the part where I shatter the illusion that that’s gonna happen.
There are plenty of fun facts and compelling stories to share, like how an exit interview led to my first client, how I’m an autodidact raised bicoastal between the West Coast and Northeast of the United States by about twenty-four different people including my five parents, or why one of my friends named their first child after me. (It’s actually a surprisingly hilarious reason, not a serious one.)
But look, we can both love avocado tacos and sitting around a campfire under our warmest outdoor blankets (No one’s taking an alpaca throw outside. We’re successful people, not monsters). Yet shared preferences are a blip on the radar compared to shared values. (Remember that when you’re dating and making new friends. It won’t be relevant that you both love Pearl Jam when you’re telling the truth and their pants are on fire.)
My belief that some form of better is always possible isn’t some buzzword-based, affirmation-on-a-reusable-water-bottle, reality-bypassing motivational argument to convince you to constantly try to improve yourself. Vomit. Sometimes you’re improved enough and you just get to enjoy being alive.
Instead, my belief that problems have solutions is quite specifically about being witness to countless moments of hurt turning into healing, confusion becoming total clarity, fear transforming into certainty, and thereby I believe pain is an opportunity to heal pain. Therefore pain is an opportunity for happiness.
At the time of writing this to you, I’ve spent 58% of my life in brutal circumstances. And though I’ve always believed the possibilities of life are indisputably limitless, actually coming out the other side of those harrowing experiences is a significant part of what proved to me that getting to better is always possible.
And, yes, I really do talk like this.
I also wear four-hundred-dollar ethically made sweaters while having no qualms about scrubbing a floor, or having a kid who ate too much birthday cake throw up on me.
When I say, “Life isn’t a mountaintop to mountaintop situation, we all go through the valley,” I’m not being poetic. I’m quoting one of the most charismatic individuals I’ve ever been in the same room with, someone who brought themselves through a lot of hurt, from living on the streets to beloved and sober millionaire.
Being in the valley is harsh, terrifying, and frankly: it sucks.
Three years into my business, I was diagnosed with three concurrent illnesses. It took seven years to fully heal. And I did fully heal. But in those seven years I didn’t know when healing would happen or if it would happen at all.
In year ten of business, I lost six of the people I was closest to in the world, in one year. Six. Five family members and one best friend.
There are so many ways to get yourself through the valley and return to the mountaintop. I’m one of them. There are many more.
As someone who’s gone through it, I can tell you that even with as much support as there are stars in the sky, nothing’s gonna completely erase the hard out of life. Scary things are scary. Sad things are sad. Infuriating people who take up the whole freaking sidewalk while moving at the pace of a snail on molasses, are infuriating.
Yet you can absolutely make the hard parts of life come less often and stay for less time.
Because maybe earth is a place of healing. Maybe that’s all we’re here for. We come to life in this place with all these geographical regions, plants, animals, and each other. And all the things that exist here, seem to have purpose. Including you.
It would seem that for as many ways as there are to get hurt here, there are to heal. There is music to hear, feelings to feel, delicious sandwiches to taste, fresh air to inhale, sweet animals to cuddle, brilliant conversations to expand through, and that moment when you’re sad and someone asks how you’re doing and you can’t help but cry and they sit silently beside you, put their hand on your hand, and squeeze.
All to say, hard times are real and getting through them with trustworthy support can help you live a life that you look back on not with embarrassment or regret, but with acceptance and maybe even some peace. Sounds nice, huh?
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve gotten to travel and spend quality time with many, many people. They come from different places, live out different beliefs, lifestyles, and thoughts on cake-to-frosting ratio. And although most people seem to think there are endless problems in the world, after a while, I noticed there’s really only one problem: “I don’t like how this feels.”
“I don’t like how it feels when I remember there are starving children in the world. I don’t like how it feels when she says that. I don’t like how it feels to think about him. I don’t like how it feels when I’m running late and hit a red light.”
Most of us, most of us are taught to be aware of the problem. Because practically everyone is talking about problems: the news, the weather, the handle on the front door is sticking, the stomachache, the headache, your phone needs to charge, the issues, the updates, the how could they and the what will you do.
What do you do with a problem?
Figure it out like a warrior? Tackle it? Avoid it? Fight it? Scream at it, about it, because of it? Think about it? Talk about it? Numb out? Contingency plan for it? Act like it doesn’t exist? Worry? Jump through the escape hatch with t.v., scrolling, gambling, sex, drinking, eating, exercise, endless to-do lists, work, reading, going catatonic, sleeping, staying distracted, or goodness gracious: being helpful, sacrificing, give give giving until your patience runs out?
All those things are strategies. As a strategist, I’d call them limited strategies. They have purpose in that you survive the pain of the moment. In that the alarm system within you, the one that’s overthinking, sweating, having heart palpitations, in that the alarm system can go quiet because you have created some relief for yourself.
Relief is useful, it can even be astoundingly healthy. But limited strategies are not solutions. They don’t solve your problems. They just push problems into your future. And, when pushed long enough, your problems grow. Bigger, scarier, more negative impact on you and those you care about.
You might notice that most of the things on your survival list aren’t inherently bad. Eating, sleeping, exercise, these can be good things. They can also go too far. Cake can be delicious. Eating cake for every meal for a year of your life? Can be disastrous. It’s what you choose after your limited survival strategy, or before it, that either brings the solution closer or pushes it further away. That either heals what hurts, or, extends and worsens the pain.
This is why so many people trust me with their secrets, their fears, their toy soldiers of regrets lined up and ready to battle. I’m uniquely comfortable jumping into hard feelings and hard times with you. Maybe it’s because I’m not so afraid of pain anymore, or maybe it’s just because all of us are medicine for someone at some point.
There are shockingly few things in life that are true for all people. Here’s one of them: everyone wants the same thing: a life that feels good.
You and I working together is about closing the gap between the problem and the solution. About breaking through so the healing gift nestled inside all that hurting you’re in can come through. And because you’re not alone in it, because someone trustworthy and honest and smart and thoughtful and caring is there with you, it’s less hard and maybe it even takes less time to get through. Often, it’s even a genuinely good time.
This is about making hard things easier, and things that feel painful feel less painful, or not painful at all anymore.
It doesn’t happen with formulas or systems or hacks. There are boundaries and guardrails and truth, but no playbook. You bring whatever is in the way and we work together to figure it out, and at some point something shifts. Repeat. Some shifts are big, some are small. But the thing is, they add up. And now, now the compound effect is working in your favor. Instead of the losses adding up, the wins are adding up. Life is changing because you, you’re feeling very different about it.
I’ve helped a lot of people make life feel better. At work, at home, with breakups and being in love, with public statements about delicate, uncomfortable things, with saying yes please and saying no thank you, with important decisions and deep research and hard conversations you don’t want to have but must have. There’s more. Of course there’s so much more. But I don’t have all day to sit around writing lists of impressive things.
Once, in the car, my four-year-old niece asked, “Who’s God?” and her parents said, “Quinn, you can take that one.” (Uh… thanks?) Who knows what I said. All I know is I tried to do my best. And the next year, when her younger sibling was about to be born, I asked, “What do you think about sharing your toys with your sister?” And as if it was the most obvious thing in the world and I had spaghetti for brains, she said, “I don’t need to do that. God will provide her with toys.” So, I guess I nailed it.
What makes the work we could do together so different than working with someone else is something you must experience for yourself. If you don’t like the experience? Tell me that in the first 30 days and I give you an amortized refund. In over ten years of business, this has never happened before. No one has ever asked. And, on average, people work with me for 3-5 years.
If you and I are two surfers out on our boards in the water together, I can be as close or far from your surfboard as you want me to be. And though I can be there with you and for you, you’re the one in charge of the ocean we’re in. Those waves are yours to ride. And how you choose to do that isn’t something I have power over. Those choices are your superpowers. I’m just here to help you learn how to use them to make life feel good, even and especially in troubled waters.
Oh, I almost forgot to tell you the most important thing. There are two bunny rabbits free-roaming around my homes with me. And they outrank you. (Have you ever seen a baby bunny? They outrank all of us.) So, if you accept your place of honor in my life directly behind them, and I accept a place of honor wherever you want me in your life most, we’re all set to do great things together.
Or not. I mean, I’m gifted but I’m not a wizard. -
Wherever you like best.
When I’m on your team we check in at the same time, on the same day each week. That can be on the phone, over video, or in-person; that part is up to you. Throughout the week, you can tag me in when things come up. And I get back to you with when we can next get together to talk it out.
It’s that simple.
You can tell the people in your life we talk, or not. That’s also up to you.
The support system and team you have in place may already be pretty incredible.
Yet most of your people, in your home and at your work when you’re still working, have a stake in your game, because one way or another they're depending on you to provide and to protect. That can make discernment clouded and sanctuary in short supply when everything you tell them becomes part of a shared history.
And sanctuary matters. Because you can only get what you want when you’re honest about what that is.
One of the things that makes our work together different is that I'm not counting on you, I'm just there for you.
I have no stake in what happens in your home, your relationships, or your office. It's not that I don't care. I care very much. It's that there aren't any of my personal needs, feelings, desires, and expectations clouding my view of you.
When you and I speak, there's no curve on the words you’re hearing. I'm not afraid of your feelings so I don’t make things sound better than they are to spare them. I also don’t make things sound worse than they are to convince you to do things my way.
I don't even believe there is a single way to get where you want to be, in business or in life, but that there are limitless solutions. Limitless paths. Your willingness to have faith and put in the effort is the only cutoff point, not your options.
Remember: you don’t have to wait a week to talk with me when something comes up. It’s rarely wise to leave figuring out a solution to a problem for that long anyway. That’s why, alongside your weekly check-in time, you have the option to tag me in anytime to talk things through and figure stuff out. You reach out, I reach back. In most cases, we can be talking things through within hours. (There are, of course, boundaries, such as weekends, after-work hours, and vacations. But there are also emergencies and I can be there for you through those, even when they happen on Sunday morning or in the middle of the night.)
Your privacy is also in your control, limited only by things I don’t control such as the internet, phone companies, and eavesdropping baristas.
Even if you don’t care much about privacy, are a very public individual, or don’t have secrets, we all have things come up that, even for a moment, feel embarrassing or terrifying. Welcome to life. It’s heartbreaking and spectacular. Devastating and enlightening. So here's how privacy works around here: I never share identifiable information about you without your consent, such as the consent the lovely people on this page gave when they shared what it's like to have me in their corner.
You're even in charge of whether our calls are recorded, if I take notes digitally, by hand, or not at all. It's up to you. State your preferences and I honor them.
After all, this work we do together is meant to be helpful to you, not stressful to you.
Having someone you can trust, who has both integrity and no trouble being honest with you, someone who listens without believing they know what’s best for you, yet who can work through dozens of possibilities with you from a place of deep care and ability, can actually be a lot of fun.
And one day, what usually happens is you realize you’re solving your own problems on your own. Less and less do you come to me with troubles, more and more you’re sharing wins. Somehow, you’ve changed, things are feeling better, and everything we did together? You get to have it forever. Every lesson, every story, every lightbulb moment. All yours.
